Professional artists Susanna Lambeck and Colm Mac Suibhne live, work and raise a young family in Annaghdown, County Galway. As a couple that share their main interest in art, they draw inspiration and encouragement from each other.

Galway Art School, which has opened in January 2012, is a new and growing project. Both Susanna and Colm have a passion for teaching and both feel strongly that art skills can be taught and that art education can and should build the students' confidence.

Apart from teaching art, Colm and Susanna are building a website on Irish culture- www.enjoy-irish-culture.com.

Susanna Lambeck

Originally from East Berlin and living in Galway since 1991, Susanna taught herself how to draw and paint at the age of 21.

As an art teacher, Susanna is interested in building confidence in her students. This desire stems from her 20 + years of experience working as a professional psychotherapist.

As an artist she has worked in many media including oil and acrylic painting, pastels as well as printmaking.

Quite early on in her painting career she fell in love with the luminosity and depth of watercolour. Susanna often uses watercolour in combination with other media (‘mixed media’) such as oil pastels, acrylic paints or soft pastels in order to achieve expressive effects and to enhance the beauty of the medium.

Susanna uses acrylic paints in many thin layers, effectively glazing over the entire canvas.

With oil painting, she runs a solvent free studio and uses old masters techniques which are quick drying and work in many opaque and semi-opaque layers.

But no matter what the medium, her work always comes to life through the use of strong contrasts such as light versus dark, rough texture versus flat texture, or colour contrasts such as the contrast of complimentary colours which all feature strongly in her work.

Susanna has work in private collections in Ireland, Germany and the U.K.

Colm Mac Suibhne

Born and raised in County Sligo, Colm showed and interest in drawing and painting from very early on in life and was taught oil painting by his late father Joseph Sweeney. Colm went on to study for a degree in art in Galway at the GMIT .

During his childhood the family used to spend every summer in Spiddal, County Galway, and like his dad, Colm was inspired there by the Connemara landscape and culture which appear frequently in his work.

With his unique sense of colour and dynamic brushwork he produces vibrant and atmospheric contemporary landscapes and seascapes. Most of Colms work features oil painting and acrylic painting.

Colm has paintings in public and private collections in Ireland, the U.K., the U.S. and the Netherlands.

Colm's interest in teaching is about wanting to encourage creativity in anyone. His teaching style supports confidence building in the learner.
